About Cap and Gown

Established in 1905, Cap and Gown is one of Stanford's oldest organizations. Promoting women by encouraging networking and the exchange of ideas, Cap and Gown seeks to bring current students and alumnae together both intellectually and socially to benefit from shared learning. Its members engage in projects of service on campus and in the community in order to maintain and promote the ideals of Stanford University.

Membership

Membership in Cap and Gown is based on high standards of academic excellence, community involvement, and leadership experience. The society extends membership invitations to outstanding Stanford women in the fall of their junior or senior undergraduate years. After initiation, Cap and Gown women remain members for life, regardless of age or distance. Click here to learn more about membership in Cap and Gown.

Mission

The mission of Cap and Gown is to honor and bring together women who have been constructively active in student affairs and the community so that as a group, they may meet to maintain and serve the ideals of Stanford University.

Cap and Gown achieves its mission by:

  1. Increasing communication and contact among women leaders on the Stanford campus.
  2. Undertaking projects and sponsoring events which support and enhance the opportunities for Stanford women, both while at Stanford and after entering the workforce and community arenas.
  3. Engaging in community service to support deserving groups on campus and in neighboring communities.
  4. Providing desired continuity to Cap and Gown and Stanford traditions; and acting as a bond between the classes of the past and present, enabling each to share the ideas and interests of the other and to cooperate to achieve common goals.
